The Doky Brothers delivered a breathtaking concert

In the mid-nineties, Niels Lan Doky and his brother bassist Chris Minh Doky released two albums as the “Doky Brothers” on the iconic Blue Note record label. Both albums sold Gold and are among the most successful Danish jazz albums ever and yielded numerous domestic and international tours including  Europe, Asia and the USA. The Doky Brothers disbanded in 1998 and both brothers went on to create impressive, prolific and enduring individual solo careers and both were knighted by HM Queen Margrethe II for their contributions to the arts. The brothers reunited briefly for the first time in 10 years, in the Summer of 2008, at a sold out show in Tivoli’s Glassalen, where they were both given the Ben Webster Award. Since then, the brothers have been heard together only rarely and sporadically.

For the final day of SOUND DUES 2022, the Doky Brothers performed a breathtaking concert. Following an intermission, an all-star show will began which will feature highlights of some of the many exciting artists appearing on this year’s program. The all-star show included the guest of honor, Monica Getz, guitar star Pelle von Bülow with world class harmonica virtuoso Mathias Heise — and David Sanborn and his NYC band brought down the house with the one and only Peter Asplund on trumpet (they ended up playing more than 1 hour).

This double bill concert took place at the wonderful beach hotel “Marienlyst Strandhotel”, in their largest hall, Marienlyst Salen. What an amazing night! We cannot wait to see and hear them back together again.

ABOUT SOUND DUES

SOUND DUES is a world class international event. It is set in a historical seaside community with Hamlet’s famous castle as a dramatic backdrop.

The name SOUND DUES stems from the toll used for Øresund in Elsinore which constituted up to two thirds of Denmark's state income in the 16th and 17th centuries - but is also a play on words, as “sound” and “dues” are words used in music, and particularly frequently within the jazz community. And our Musical Director, Danish/American/Vietnamese jazz artist, Niels Lan Doky, has paid many dues in his career journey to becoming the Knight of Jazz, now being called “the best pianist of his generation” and is knighted by HM The Queen of Denmark.

Having moved to Elsinore himself recently, Niels joins a strong legacy of former jazz icon residents of the municipality - which besides Stan Getz also includes Duke Jordan and Svend Asmussen - and launches SOUND DUES with the intention to help others discover the beauty in the city he now calls home.

Collectively, SOUND DUES is an event & experience with an international profile. It is conceptual and ambitious - but at the same time accessible. Intended to be more than what the audience would define as a “music festival”, SOUND DUES will offer an innovative and refreshing addition to the existing international circuit of recurring jazz festivals all over the globe and become a wider celebration of the culture, community and lifestyle of Jazz in its many forms: From music to food, art, fashion, history, education, philosophy, business, literature, belief systems and more. The goal is to present unique concerts and events not just in the historic city of Elsinore, but also all over the municipality with its numerous beautiful locations and cosy small towns. There's a connection to the sea & landscape as well as the aesthetics of the city. Community intertwines with jazz, fashion, coffee, food, art and more, as intimate jazz performances will flood into local shops and cafés - in parallel with the bigger ticketed flagship events. Aside from offering a chance to experience concerts, artist communities, industry gathering, conferences, F&B, fashion, comedy, alternate programming, art and crafts, SOUND DUES is also a media vehicle and drive for local volunteering, commercial partnerships, and local business engagements and with plans to expand to include educational programs for youth development in order to reinvest in jazz’ future.
